Common questions
Which cable size do I need?
That depends on the load, the length of the run and the breaker protecting it — your electrician decides it, and their choice is what you enter here. This calculator only adds up the metres and coils for the routes and cables you give it.
How many metres in a coil?
Wire is commonly sold in coils (gattha) of about 90 m, but check the length printed on the pack and enter it for each cable. The calculator rounds each cable up to whole coils and shows what is left over.
How do I count conductors?
Count every wire pulled through that route: phase and neutral make 2; add 1 for an earth wire if it runs in the same route; a two-way switch run has more. Your electrician’s plan shows them.
Why pure copper?
Cheap wire sold as copper is often copper-coated aluminium or has thin strands; it heats up under load and is a common cause of house fires. Scrape a strand — it should be copper all the way through — and buy from a known mill.
