Bricks or blocks for a wall, worked out from the unit’s own size and the joint — no fixed “bricks per square foot”. Doors and windows are deducted, breakage is added once, and the mortar is whatever space the units leave in the wall.
Common questions
How many bricks per square foot of wall?
It depends on the brick’s real size and the joint. With 9 × 4.5 × 3 in bricks and 3/8 in joints, one face of wall takes 144 ÷ (9.375 × 3.375) = 4.55 bricks per sq ft, so a 9 in (two-brick) wall takes about 9.1 per sq ft before breakage. Smaller bricks need more — measure yours and enter the size.
Bricks, concrete blocks or AAC blocks?
Bricks are the local default: cheap, heavy, good for 9 in outside walls, and every mistri knows them. Concrete blocks go up faster and use less mortar but need good plaster and a lintel band. AAC blocks are light, insulate well and are laid with thin adhesive instead of sand mortar, but need special fixings for wardrobes and geysers and a mistri who has used them before.
How is the mortar worked out?
Whatever is not brick is mortar: the wall volume minus the volume of the bricks, plus the wastage you set, then converted to dry cement and sand (wet volume × 1.3). With 9 × 4.5 × 3 in bricks and 3/8 in joints that is about 0.11 cu ft of wet mortar per sq ft of 9 in wall before wastage. The result lists every figure it used.
